Rheanna, Zack & I were at the summer lunch program at the church in California, MO. I had a call from Max's cell phone and Glen was on the phone. He told me that there had been an accident and that Max was hurt.He told me that Max was being airlifted from Hermann and flown to Columbia. A tree had hit/fallen on Max and it was bad.
We picked up Ray who was at the summer lunch program, ran by the house, picked up a few items and then to columbia. When we were able to see him he was talking but had a lot of pain in his wrist. The arm was bruised and swollen but the dr said it wasn't broken. He continued to complain about the pain in his arm and was getting worse. They finally deteremined that there was something going on and they needed to cut openn the arm so the swelling didn't shut off the blood supply and kill tissue. He went into surgery Tuesday night and came out on a ventilator.
His injuries are a broken leg, it broke in 2 places below the knee, tissue damage in the arm the tree hit, 5 broken ribs and the 2 fractured vertebra. The one fracture has damaged the spinal cord but we don't know to what extent. Max couldn't feel his legs after the accident and hasn't had feeling since the accident. Anything below his belly button he cant feel.
Wednesday they tried to keep him asleep because when was wasn't he was fighting the ventilator. Max kept chewing on the tube and working on it and finally bit a whole in his ventilator tube. So they ended up having to replace it.. When he was sedated a lot his blood pressure when down, when they backed off and his blood pressure came up he would fight to free his hands to take the tube out. He had a fever wednesday night but it's down now to a slight fever. This evening it was trying to go back up.
I talked with the neuro surgeon ~ one of many surgeons it seems like and they indicated the best thing would be to have surgery on his fractured spine. The want to put screws & rods to support the back and straighten it so the damaged spinal cord could get some pressure off of it. They were going to do surgery Friday but they have postponed it until Monday to let his lungs do better.
There so many things I need to tell you about how good God is and how he has taken care of us but honestly my head is about to drop and I need to sleep. I will tell you more come tomorrow. Just know we appreciate your prayers and that your thinking about us. Love, Sherry
